hello gang,

i got a call from apple stating i have a week left to get applecare for my rev a dual 2 gig g5.

so a year has past and people now are just receiving their g5 2.5's. i was rendering a 15 minute video clip that is taking 8 hours to render before i can use it so every ounce of speed is important to me but since i don't generate a large portion of my income from video work and so an upgrade to the 2.5 isn't cost effective for me.

my question is, do you think apple is abandoning the 6 month update cycle for the powermac and is going to go with a yearly cycle?

a 3.0 would have been worth it for me to upgrade but do you think i will have to wait till next sept. before i can be working on one.

the reason i bring this up is because apple seems preoccupied with other hardware. specifically the now released imac g5, ipod updates and i'm sure they are spending alot of resources getting the g5 powerbook to market.

i think they are veering off course with the flagship ship hardware for creative proffessionals.

just some of my thoughts.

Yeah, I think your assumption is basically correct. I remember hearing about an official Apple statement to the effect that the company would be going to a six month upgrade cycle. In addition to that, judging by the difficulties IBM has had lately, we probably should not be expecting a 3GHz G5 in the near future.

I was in the exact same situation, I received a letter from Apple that the warranty on my dual 2 GHz G5 was soon expiring and I had not purchased AppleCare for it. If the Powermac was at or soon to be dual 3.0 GHz I would have sold it but since the dual 2.5 GHz G5 is not a great upgrade and the dual 3.0 GHz is not around the corner I opted to purchased AppleCare for my dual 2 GHz G5. I figure if I want to get my G5 very close to the speed of the dual 2.5 GHz all I have to do is add more ram and put in a 10,000 rpm HD. I'll wait until at least the 3.0 GHz G5 to upgrade.

I think Apple is attempting to stretch their update cycle to at least 9 months. With the slowdown in performance increases, even on the Intel side, why update the line so often.
