Im a film student currently with a 12in rev.a powerbook and a pc desktop. Im wanting to start using mac and my primary editing hardware by getting the production suite from apple, so i have 3 options.

1) upgrade my powerbook to full ram, (768mb), buy the production suite, and use that with my monitor. use the extra money to save up some more and get the dvx100a video camera. probably like 700USD (not including camera)
2) get a 1.8ghz G5 DP tower, use an extra 512 stick from my pc to this one. probably around 1900-2000 USD. + 500 USD for production sutite
3) get a 2.0 G5 DP tower, use the extra 512 stick. probably 2500 USD. + 500USD for production suite.

i guess i have 2 main questioins. Could my powerbook handle the production suite well?

Would the difference between the 1.8 and the 2.0 really be that big of a deal with the production suite, , around 400 dollars difference?

Get a G5. I've just got a dual 2ghz and it's an incredible machine. Internally it's bettter than the 1.8 and therefore I would say a bit more future-proof. Spend the extra now on a dual 2ghz and you won't regret it... Just keep adding more RAM as you can afford it. I went for the £40 graphics card update, you may want the 9800.

I've done production work with my 15" PB. It is definitely doable. Some things I wish for, bigger screen, more speed, cooler PB (it does get warm when crunching). While I have no problem doing more work with my 15 incher in the mean time; I have already decided that a desktop rig is in my future. Bottom line: life is sweeter if you can afford to make the jump.

For the dual processor g5's, you must install ram in pairs, so you can't just add one extra stick from your pc, you will need two.
