I have a Dual Gig MDD G4 that came with a Superdrive on the top drive bay. I installed a Pioneer 107D drive on the bottom bay and after about two months the drive died. Refuse to read/mount any disks.

I exchanged it with another one, but this time I replaced the original Superdrive on the top bay with the newer 107D. On the bottom drive bay I placed a generic 16X dvd-rom that seemed to work just fine.

Well, as you guess it, the 16x DVD-rom drive on the bottom bay died as it refuses to mount any discs that put in it; just like the Pioneer did earlier.

Is there any reason why it would do this??? I have checked the temperature in the tower and it does not change from the normal range so I am not sure if this is it.

Any ideas???

If it's anything like my Sawtooth, it's overheating. I took the front CD drive door off my Sawtooth after my 105 went bad, and the 106 replacement unit has worked just fine. There's a small vent on the front that helps cool it off.

I agree. The second bay is not the best place for the second drive. After going through a similar experiece like yours. I just stopped putting any drive at the bottom bay. I think there are two reasons: one, the bay does not allow the heat from the drive to dissipate enough and two, its too close to the heatsink/processor.

I was afraid the heat form the heatsink might damage the other drive on bay one/top, I even attached a hard drive cooler, placed in such a way it blows towards the heat sink.
