firmware is permanent memory that is used to store the basic interface to the hardare (if its anything like the bios on a pc) so there can be no resetting of it. Where as the nvram stores semi-volitle info, that if reset/zapped can clean out any corruption.

For all intent purposes firmware is read only. That is under normal operation you cannot update the firmware, you need a special program to do so.

My guess is its something other then the firmware that is causing your mac to fail.

Since you say it does not boot at all, a common remedy is a PMU reset (pressing a small button on the logic board once). A google search will yield many hits on the subject.

"reset-NVRAM" -- so you *can* get to open firmware? More information would be helpful:

Does the power button light up when you push it?
Do you hear fans spinning?
Do you hear a chime?
Does the PRAM reset do anything? (i.e. do you hear a second chime?)
Can you boot into open firmware?
Do you get anything at all on the screen?
Do you get a blinking question mark?

All of these questions relate to "not booting at all," but they all refer to different issues.
