Two of the powermac g4's in our office have superdrives. One is not recognizing blank media, a problem I have familiarized myself with on these forums, but have found no solution. The other, I beleive the drive is completly shot. It hasn't been able to eject anything even from the open firmware prompt, and it doesn't show up in the apple system profiler. I've archived and installed osx on the one that won't read blanks with no luck, i haven't done so on the dead one as I feel it to be hopeless. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of replacing the drives in both of them and am open to any suggestions for models and vendors. The procedure seems fairly do-able and I'm feeling adventurous. And we cannot afford to be without two computers for the week it would take a service company.

My Superdrive just recently stopped burning DVD's on me. It burns and reads CD-R/RW's just fine, and reads DVD's fine. I had some memory go bad and it messed the system up pretty good so I reinstalled OS X clean in hopes that it might clear up the problem. It didn't, I bought a package of super cheap blank DVD media, before the problem I burned 15 disc without a single problem, now I'm afraid the other 85 are junk or it's my Superdrive. I plan on purchasing better media in the next few days to confirm it.
