FreeScale announced new G4 processors (single and dual cores) today. But will they be made available by Gigadesigns or Sonnet as CPU Upgrades for MDD/FW800 G4 towers?

Seriously we MDD owners need a cpu upgrade option.

And will these dual core G4s work with NAP mode enabled? OR are they doom to a lifetime of overheating like the dual processor G4s (which can't work with NAP mode) in our MDD/FW800 towers?

As I understand, the Dual Core processors announced are for embedded design only. The only microprocessor for use in "computers" is the 7448 which is an evolution of the 7447A to the smaller 90nm fabrication process. So there will be no dual core upgrades from this announcment in the near future.

All of the G4s have been embedded chips. The only thing that makes the dual core one less suitable for desktops is all the stuff it integrates (PCI-E, Ethernet, etc...). Even that could be useful to Apple, just not in an upgrade card. However, it'll still be a while, since it's supposed to come out in the 2nd quarter of '05.
