Hi, I just got my 2.5Ghz G5 a couple of weeks ago, and I've noticed in iTunes that burning CDs have been quite slow. Sometimes even burning around 13min. This is supposed to be a 24x drive(it's the HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B)! Then just now I started to burn a CD in Toast and I noticed that I could only select speeds of up to 8x. Something's going on here.
Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to rectify it?

what is the rated speed of the CD-R media?
What version of toast?
What happens when you burn with Disk Utility?

48x for the media
Toast 6.0
I'm burning a CD now in Disk Utility and I set it at 24x. However, the console says this:
Disk Utility: Burning to CD-R media with SAO strategy in HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B C039 via ATAPI.
Disk Utility: Requested CD burn speed was 24x, actual burn speed is 16x.
Disk Utility: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.

[EDIT] Then I get this with iTunes:

Requested CD burn speed was 24x, actual burn speed is 8x.

The drive may not recognize the 48X media as such. Try different media.

I just tried a CD in my new iMac G5, it took just over 7 minutes to burn a 1 hour CD.

I used x48 media and the drive is supposed to be a x16, so the fastest time it should do a 60 min CD in is 60/16 = 3.75 mins.

That means it really burned at more like x8, even though it is set to burn at the fastest possible.

I suppose it could also be related to the speed at which it can convert the AAC files back to music for the CD.

update toast to 6.0.7 it has new drivers and more support for more drives
and media.

in toast do a DISC INFO on your current CD-R media
(before and after upgrading to 6.0.7 toast) and compare the results.

try a different brand of CD-R

Ok, I'll see if I can get some lower speed media.

What is also troubling is when I when I try to get Disc Info on the CDR, the application freezes up. It doesn't respond. I can't even force quit it. Infinite beachball; so bad that my only choice is to hold down the power button.

that is with 6.0.7? 6.0 was real buggy but 6.0.7 seems very good for me.

Has anyone else experienced this slow superdrive on 2.5 ghz machines? Perhaps this is an isolated issue.
