Yesterday I bought the dual 2.5 machine from one of my local Apple Stores. I brought it home excited to install all my software and have it up and running last night.

Ah, to dream,,,

I was crushed, no, CRUSHED to discover that the drive was installed in such a fashion that it will not open. It catches on the housing of the computer.

I consider it a pain in the a$$ to have to spend time on a Saturday driving an hour one way to get this repaired. Especially given the cost of this machine.

Rant over.

If anyone from Apple is listening, you quality control blows.

Perhaps, but then should I consider the past two PowerBooks I've purchased to have just gotten by with their issues? How about the 40GB iPod I got in January?

Thank you MinFad, I understand you only meant to brighten things a wee bit.

I should add that I find this mouse and keyboard to be mighty chincy. Not like the old ones. Not at all.

I was. That's a bit of an unlucky stretch—what were the problems with the PowerBooks?

And about the Power Mac, you mean the latch itself hits the drive when you try and take the side panel off?

I've only owned two Macs so far, my original iMac rev. A (233) that died after little over a year from a burnt out analog video card (so the guy said), and my dual 800 PM now. I miss the ol' iMac, but the dual 800 has been a beastly workhorse for the past 3 years, and no problems. Damn fine machine, if getting a little long in the tooth nowadays. Hopefully to be upgraded to a dual 3GHz sometime next year.

Let us know how the fixing up goes.

Edit: I'm also not a fan of the current mouse or keyboard. The old keyboard wasn't bad, I guess, though it was similar. I've since upgraded to a Macally iKey, and just last month to a Macally IceKey, the very slim, laptop-like keyboard. Best keyboard I've owned. So slim, so quiet.

Anyway you can remove and reinstall the drive yourself?

The drive tray hits the housing of the computer. It's clearly misalligned.

Thanks for the suggestion, Maflynn, but I'm thinking that being a mere 14 hours out of the box I best take it in to the Apple Store to be safe.

Regardless, I know I'll LOVE this machine.

The PowerBooks,,,one (Ti 667) came with RAM clips that were cracked. That was back before they switched over to metal clips. The other (Al 1.25) came complete with three spots on the screen – the fabled pooling of pixels caused by the styrofoam in the boxes they shipped in. Had the screen replaced within a month (also took two weeks) and the pooling started up right away. Once my tower is up and running it goes in for repair.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an Apple lover and have owned more than my share of them:

- Apple 2Plus (when I was a kid)
– Quadra
– B&W G3 400
– 5GB Original iPod
– B&W G3 800
– Pismo PowerBook
– Ti 400 PowerBook
– Ti 667 PowerBook
– Al 1.25 PowerBook
– 40GB Third Gen iPod
– Dual 2.5 G5

Viva la Apple.

This is a common problem in G5's, the drive just came out of alignment in shipping.

Just take the drive, loosen its mounts, reseat it, and tighten the mounts again. All will be well.

Fix it yourself! It's not like one of the CPUs is bad (another common problem).

Don't let a misaligned CD-tray keep you from using your brand new powermac! It won't void the warranty and it will save you two hours of driving!
