In previous threads, I mentioned how I choose to buy for 1400 (1510 after taxes and free shipping) the G4 iMac 20inch over the new G5 iMac 20inch, because I just loved the old style more (not to mention I still saved 500 bucks or so).

Anyway, it just arrived today and it's awesome. I went from an ibook G3 500 (which I'm going to keep too) to this speed demon. It's night and day. I lucked out and got no dead pixels eithers.

Even better, I got a 160GB drive when I only thought it was going to be an 80GB. It says 80 on my invoice, but I guess whoever owned it before got it upgrade to the 160GB. Good news for me!

Now my 1st decison is how much RAM to get. The 512 sticks are priced just right, but a 1GB stick might be worth it. But when the 512 sticks are 130 and the 1GB are closer to 400, it's tough to just go for it.

I know some people found cheaper 1GB ram, but I get nervous if the RAM is much cheaper than anywhere else I've seen. Makes me think it's not good RAM and I'd rather spend more $$$ for peace of mind.

I checked out www.crucial.com and it's layed out quite well, but for some reason they only show you 256 or 512 sticks when I look up my 20inch G4 imac. They do offer 1GB sticks, but you have to really search for it. I noticed this too on www.macmall.com and www.macconnection.com. I find that odd.

You think they would want you to buy the more expensive RAM and offer it too you as a choice, rarther than the customer having to search it out.

Anyway, like I said on my other thread, I'm going to be using FCP Pro 4.5 (which I just bought). I don't use many effects, I'm mostly just a straight cuts kind of guy. A kevin smith movie if you will. Indepndent films that dont' require days of rendering.

I also want to burn DVD's.

I'm sure I won't regret getting a 1GB stick of RAM, but will adding a 512 to my standard 256 built in, be enough ram for what i need? I'd rarther save the 250 bucks and use it for other things if I don't need it.

And for others, let me know what other upgrades you made that you think add to your experience.

I'm thinking of getting airport, a new keyboard, maybe a bluetooth mouse/keyboard.

Any tips let me know.

But for those of you considering buy REFURB macs, I give it my 100% recommendation. It looks brand new and I got more than I even asked for. Awesome.

Has anyone tried it? To me 160 seems too good to be true. Is this a good place to order from from experience?

Thanks for the link.

Any other places that might be a bit more expensive, but aren't on backorder? I'm ready to get started using FCP 4, but i Need at least 384 to get going.

This is a pretty good deal. Lots of positive reviews from customers there. I've bought this same brand before and not had any problems.

Looks like a great deal. But it only seems Powerbook people purchased this 1GB ram though.

Is the RAM the same size and should it fit into my iMac G4?

I'm not sure which number tells me how big it is.

200pin? 2700?

I don't really know what any of the numbers mean except for the actually amount of RAM.

Has anyone with an iMac G4 ordered this yet? I'm considering this for my 20" too...
Mac Mini C2D 1.83/1/80/10.5.5
iMac G4 20" Superdrive 1.25/1.25/80/10.4.9
iBook G4 12" 1.33/512/40/10.4.9
iPod Video 30GB / Shure e4c Earbuds

The 20" iMac uses one 184 Pin PC2700 DDR DIMM and one 200 pin PC2700 DDR SO-DIMM. It SHOULD be the same as in the powerbook. Each slot supports 1GB DIMMs (more than the 512MB that Apple reports).

The powerbook thread reports that Outpost has the SO-DIMMs backordered and doesn't expect them for at least 30 days.

Just to be safe, I would go for the Newegg SO-DIMM. It is proven.

Unfortunatelty, I cannot afford to even pre-order the Outpost SO-DIMM, otherwise I would.

Anybody know if this will work in the inner slot of an iMac G4 20"? Only $160.
