I just received notice that my 20" iMac G5 was shipped Oct.5
The FedEx site shows delivery date of Oct. 25 I paid for the upgraded shipping to Texas. Is it possible that it will take 20 days to deliver. This seems like an awfully long time. Thanks

Yeah that sounds about right. Last year some Power Mac G5 users had to wait like 4 months even, I think! That must have sucked!

when i was about to order the iMac G5 online it said 3-4 weeks ship time, so i said screw that and am going to buy from the apple store instead. They said they would get a shipment in this week so I hope they are right and that i made a good decision to ditch ordering online!

I think either FedEx or Apple site screws up on the date. For 20 days, you can ship the stuff from north pole to south pole, and back (metaphore only).

Wait for a day, and check it again.

Are they known to screw up the dates? That's interesting. If it is a wrong estimate then I could have just ordered online. I think that waiting 3-4 weeks to ship is pretty freaking ridiculous and makes people not want to purchase them!

I added the iMac G5 to my shopping cart and did the "continue" (i didn't purchase it though) at the Apple.com store, this is what it says for me:

Part No.
M9250LL/A

Est Ship
3-4 weeks

if they are known for giving over-long estimates then i may just order online cause the local apple store people seem to have no idea when they get new shipments of iMacs.

The date you got was the delivery date from the Apple plant. Then it should take 3-7 days until the package reaches you. This is "should" though, because I had a date of October 11th and had it delivered out on October 23rd. Then it was held up by an aircraft failure and only got to Europe (Luxembourg) this Friday. TNT finally show it as them having received the package yesterday, so maybe it's here tomorrow or Thursday.

You misunderstood the question of original post. Your estimated time-to-ship is from the date you order to the date Apple ships your product, which includes the production time and backlog process time of the orders. Most of the estimated time is to wait for your order to be built. This is a new product, so it takes time for Apple to ramp up the production to meet the demand.

The original poster receives a confirmation email of product being built and shipped from Apple's manufacturer in Taiwan, but it is estimated to take 20 days to deliver it to the shipping location, Texas.

Apple usually ships the order from Taiwan to US through air, then it has to pass the US Custom, then it will ship either through ground transportation or air to the final destinatiion depending on your choice of shipping method. It should not take 20 days to ship from Taiwan to Texas. The only factor is that it might get held up in the US Custom for a couple days.

Your order is still waiting to be built, Conker So be patient.

Waiting the Apple product to be shipped is the most difficult part of this process. We all have the experience at one time or more.

Once your iMac G5 is shipped, you will be all happy and rewarded. Patience is the greatest virtue.

In another thought, maybe FedEx is playing mind game with you by lowering your expectation. Then you will be so thankful when it arrives early unexpectedly.

Otherwise, FedEx might want to change name to FedSlo.

I wouldn't trust Apple's estimated delivery date. I ordered mine Sept 28th and it said I would get it on October 22. Then it changed to October 15 and stayed at that date even though it was delivered yesterday morning. 3-4 weeks was more like 1 week.

I'm not complaining mind you, I'm just suggesting to take the date with a grain of salt.

Yesterday, as I am almost on the point of ordering a 20" , I visited 2 central London resellers to see what the wait time might be like.
One had back orders for 16 20" BTO but had 11 standard 20" in stock. Delivery expected in about 2 weeks. Interestingly, their usual BTO config of 512RAM + BT combo appears to carry a £30 premium over the Apple price.
The other was awaiting a delivery - again about 2 weeks - of 25, although they were not sure how many would actually turn up! No info as to orders.
Apple UK yesterday were quoting 4 weeks for a BTO 20".
Make of all that what you will!

I can add my experience to the discussion here:
  • iMac G5 ordered: 8/31/2004
    Apple's estimated ship date: 9/29/2004
    Actual ship date: 9/24/2004
    FedEx's estimated delivery date: 10/20/2004
    Actual delivery date: 9/29/2004
I figured that FedEx way overestimated just so that I'd be pleasantly surprised rather that fiercely disappointed. I never expected it to take 4 weeks to get here.

It did take a roundabout way to get to my doorstep, though. I charted my iMac's progress across the world here:
