Does Apple think the magical buzz around the once-popular iMac is going sell the new iMac G5 or are they going to advertise the darn thing?
Their ad. department seems quite pathetic as of late in regards to the Mac platform. The switch campaign showed hope and signs that Apple actually wants more people to its platform. Unfortunately, that campaign failed miserably as unit sales continue to shrink or sit at standstill.
What marketing campaigns have come out of Apple since then (ignoring the iPod)? The PowerBooks have had only modest bumps over the past couple years so there's nothing to gloat about with them. I can't remember if I've ever even seen an iBook ad. The only commercial I can remember from the Switch campaign is the PowerMac G5 guy-blown-through-wall ad which arguably touted the G5 as the fastest personal computer in the world.
And now the iMac G5 is released and I haven't seen an ad., billboard, or banner anywhere. Perhaps I just have a limited scope, but is it me or is Apple's advertising and marketing of the Mac platform been really pathetic in recent history?
Surely, nothing beats a media buzz that gets consumers excited over some new product, but so far, I don't see the iMac G5 doing that. The reasons for this are a separate issue, but if I were Apple, I would be intensely focused on getting consumers buying Macs again after I went nearly a whole quarter with no midrange Mac to sell, and sold barely 60k iMacs the quarter before. That includes marketing, advertising, and informing the public of the new iMac G5 and convincing people to buy it... people other than existing Mac users looking to upgrade. It's almost like they're starting from scratch.
So I guess my question is, when is Apple going to get back to being a computer company and start advertising Macs again, particularly the iMac G5?
