Hideously ugly, more expensive than an iMac and the pandering-to-teens marketing will turn off more kids than it attracts.

Apparently some guy started the company because his kid wanted a Mac, but he didn't want to buy it for him.

At least it has a better graphics card then the iMac! It's not beautiful, but in my opinion either is the iMac G5.

yeah, they got one thing right. but only one. it's like the inverse of the iMac... everything right with the iMac is wrong with it, and the one thing wrong with the iMac they got right...

They're marketing it directly at teenagers, which means they (teenagers) will instantly distrust it.

Ok, the testimonials are fake, that is for sure ( they are even badly faked since one of the kids stutters out his testimonial like you do if you doublecheck the written text ), but Apple's done that in the past, only they had a grown up ( salesman - Jobs ) telling the lies, not kids. It's an ad, and who ever believes ads ? Oh...

So, the target market for this product is teens. No, it won't play Doom3 even if it has a better GPU than the iMac, but then neither will the iMac if anyone is to believe the GF5200U offenders.

It will however do all the same stuff that the iMac does, and it does take the "digital hub" concept a step further ( albeit with inferior - and cheaper - hardware : USB 512M MP3 player vs iPod etc ).

To many that dislike the proportions and looks of the iMac, this gimmick may actually be a hit, and the skinning feature, that is truly popular with the teens. See Nokia cellphones and Dell laptops..

The marriage of laptop and desktop components is an old one.

Years ago I used to tinker with stuff like this:

gateway/aol iappliance

3Com Audrey

both of those shipped with a version of Linux, oddly enough. Both have touchscreens, as well. Replacing the FlashRAM with a hard drive was one of the 'required' mods - while adding a CDROM was considered a more extreme mod. Most folks used them to run Windows. I used my hacked Gateway iAppliance to run a dedicated Quake server back in the day. It ran great on the 800MHz Transmeta Crusoe processor. sigh...I miss those days.

If it was shown BEFORE the new iMac then how is it a rip-off?

one interesting note from slashdot (SethJohnson):

Just to clarify for everyone, Kent Savage is the same guy behind the Netpliance iOpener [com.com]. He's one of those dot-com bubble masters who doesn't really 'get-it' but can spins some concept up that looks great on paper and board rooms. Other people who also don't 'get-it' in these meetings sucker into his pitches and invest in stupid ideas like this without recognizing the fatal flaws.
he also provides this link: http://www.engadget.com/entry/3475938726183462/ which confirms his info

Sorry, was referring to this article....

Money quote... "It was Chairman and CEO Kent Savage's own experience after his son asked him for an iMac that led to the new all-in-one system's creation."
