I've had my iMac DV for almost 5 years now, and it's been a good ol workhorse, but came back today and it's dead.

When I press the power button it powers up for about a tenth of a second and then dies. Have tried replacing CMOS battery, and other power leads, but no joy.

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? If it's fixable, or should I be looking to get a new computer!?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Adam

I'll take a guess and say you know what you are doing, so you should have zapped pram already. Someone should be able to tell you how to do it (i have forgotten). But in short, if nothing fixes, start looking for a shiny new e/iMac

or a used one for that matter if you only need a 400 mhz g3
to zap parameter-ram(pram)you hold down command+option+P+R although I don't see what good this will do it couldn't hurt.
btw you kow it has successfully been reset if the computer chimes three times.

Assuming the PRAM zap doesn't work... Open the machine up and see if you see anything obviously wrong. Also try replacing the RAM, but that's pretty much all you can do.

Thanks for your help guys.. I've tried everything and still no joy.

I am currently writing this from an old 350mhz G3 with my iMac's HD in, so not all is lost.

I suppose this does give me an excuse to upgrade to a shiny new G5 iMac, but don't know if I can afford it.

Oh well!!

Thanks again.

Did you try installing OS X on it without upgrading the firmware? That can cause it to behave like that.

If not, it sounds to me like your power/analog/video board isn't working. You can probably get a replacement on eBay for under $100, but they're not easy to change unless you're handy with a screwdriver.

Upgraded the firmware years ago.. has been running OS X since the very first Beta release, and never had any problems with it.

It was literally working one day, turned it off when I went away for the night, came back and it didn't work.
