Because XBench can't even manage meaningful comparisons between machines of the same model and speed, let alone different ones. What I would do is look at the apps you use and find out how many can use more than one processor, and look at the other features of the machines as well. Then maybe go out and find one of each to try, if you can. The dual 533 is a particularly nice machine, but they're kinda pricey.

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. Mostly.
What about day-to-day activities, like opening Mail, etc.? Also, the stock video card for the 733 is better. Is there a significant difference for my scenario?

The 733 is going to feel faster for most things, because most apps don't take full advantage of multiple threads.
In some specific cases, the 450 will be better (if you're running some hog of an app, and want mail checking to still be responsive, for example). But absent some app in the background being a pig, the 733 will in general "feel" snappier.

It does. I just swapped my drive out with my designer's machine. she got a g5 though.
