In my external hard drives, there is a folder named "Recycled" with different files and most of the images that I have thrown away from the folders in it. When i throw them away, i simply drag them to the trash. Why is that folder there, and can i delete the contents of it safely? This is eating into my disk space on the drives.

Any thoughts?

I don't ever remember seeing "recylced" though I have seen ".trashes". If you throw items in the trash and don't empty the trash, the files will continue to take up space until you empty the trash (otherwise, how would you ever be able to recover something you've thrown away ?)

Also, before panther, my externals would sometimes not release this space until I'd unmounted and remounted the drive. Try that and see if your space is recovered.

unlikely but if you see it with your own eye's then it must be true if you can post a screenshot so we know its valid, because I just searched my hd for all items whose name contains recycled and got nothing even when searching for invisible and visible items.

Sounds a bit like the external has been connected to a PC. Windows puts everything you put in the trashcan in a "Recycled" folder until you empty the trashcan. Anyone who has VPC can try it out, just delete something in your Windows environment, quit and mount the disk, and you'll see a folder named "Recycled".
