A last minute tip indicates that Apple will also be introducing a new PowerMac G5 model as early as tomorrow alongside the rumored iBook updates.
The new PowerMac G5 will be a low end single processor 1.8GHz machine with 256MB of RAM, 80GB HD, GeForce FX 5200, and SuperDrive for $1499.
The new machines provides Apple with a lower end "headless" Mac. In comparison, the (less expandable) 1.8GHz iMac with built-in 17" LCD is also priced at $1499.
Let the whining about ram, vid card etc begin!

We should know by tues.
next tues is the U2 apple ipod thing (60 gig ipod?)
or this:
Sources close to the group say the U2 edition of the popular digital music player will come preloaded with the band's new album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, along with portions of the Irish supergroup's 25-year catalogue. The iPods will be black and will be made available the same week as the band's 11th studio album, which is slated to be released in the U.S. by Universal Music Group's Interscope Records on November 23.
and I bet they want to get the bumps out of the way this tues.

apple did just announce tonight that a special event with u2 will occur next tuesday. i hope the black ipod isn't labeled like "U2 special edition" or something. i like u2 but i don't want their name on my ipod
i don't see any reason for anyone to whine about the ram and vid card being 256 mb and geforce 5200fx this is a "low end" model

Oh i agree. i was being facetious. These specs are great. Its just that apple could ship a 30" imac for $999 and someone would find something to complain about.

New G5 confirmed in ExperCom email:
Apple also announced a new model to the Power Mac G5 lineup. Filling a gap in the low end, they have resurrected a single processor 1.8GHz Power Mac G5. If you don't run in dual-processor aware applications all day, this is a great model, as it saves you $500 over the same computer with dual processors. We are throwing in 512MB of extra RAM for a total of 768MB, or you can choose a great AppleCare bundle price. Stock is expected soon:
$1499 Power Mac G5 1.8GHz 256/80G/SuperDrive w/ extra 512MB FREE
$1599 Power Mac G5 1.8GHz 256/80G/SuperDrive w/ AppleCare

Only catch: the FSB is 600 MHz, not 900. This may not matter as much with a single-processor system though. And like that e-mail said: if you don't use SMP-aware apps, don't spend the $500 extra.

The OS makes great use of SMP even if applications are not optimized for it. DP G5s are definitely worth the extra cost. But I applaud Apple for giving consumers an entry level Power Mac right now, for whatever short period of time we'll see it. I was rather surprised by the move - I did not think we would see the SP 1.8 come back from the dead. I'm pretty sure this development has much more to do with a glut of 1.8GHz chips than with any sudden revelation on Apple's part that consumers desire a lower cost, headless Power Mac.

some might actually find the 1.6 a better machine. The 1.6 has 800 mhz bus. other then that the 1.8 has 3200 ram instead of the 1.6's 2700. i couldn't find the 1.6 in apple's refurb or at small dog. ^^

Can you still use the 2 GM memory modules in these? For a total of 8 GB? Also which is faster overall the 1.6 Ghz with full bus or this new one with the crippled bus?

The FSB is the same speed as on the 17" LCD 1.8 GHz iMac.

They still have the dual 1.8 for only 200 more than the new single 1.8.

Nope, the two 1.8 GHz models come with a paltry 256 MB of RAM while the 2.0 and 2.5 GHz ones have 512 MB as before.

Don't see the appeal: you get the same specs as an iMac, for the same price, but without the 17" monitor. You've got to *really* want all that expansion capability (room for one HD, and a different graphics cards :-) ... to give up a free 17" display!

Have you thought that apple's target markets like Design would love these machines?
Of course they would.
They already have a monitor and this is going to make a great upgrade machine.
Corp buyers have different needs than "joe imac i want to play games all day."

Not sure what your final point was directed at, I was simply commenting that the new bottom end doesn't give you much to make up for the missing 17" LCD. I run an academic lab which uses mostly powermac G5s, so appreciate their advantages, but for such serious work wouldn't touch anything not dual. For a single CPU machine, the iMac is the way to go in general.
I'm not saying the single CPU powermac won't have a niche ... but it's gotta be small. Even if you've already got a display .. hook it up to the iMac and enable monitor spanning

Don't forget that not everyone likes LCDs.

Oh well ... I just *really* don't understand the enthusiasm for this machine. If it had the non-crippled (900MHz) bus, that would at least give it a performance advantage over the iMac. But whatever ... I don't have to buy it

I'm just saying that Design people (photoshop) in ad agencies, special efx houses, -etc will look at the new g5 as a great upgrade machine. (they already have monitors etc)
Those types of users usually have dual monitors and need expansion like that.

No, they probably sold them all.
As soon as the last one gets sold, they pull the listing until they have more refurbs of that model to sell. That's how it's always worked.
