I have a Dual 1 ghz g4 quicksilver system. Every now and then I have this anoying problem of the system not shutting down and powering off. When it gets stuck, it's sitting there right after it closes all the apps, and even the finder's menu bar is gone sitting there with the mouse still displaying and able to move, but no spinning orb in the middle of the screen when it's getting ready to fully shutdown. It comes and goes. No new software and no new hardware. I can go with a week and no problems, then one day it starts acting up again. It's very sparatic and anoying at times when you have to then reboot the system and the re-shutdown again and most times it works just fine then, but it should always work the first time.
Anything I can start looking for? Yes I do use sleep, but there are times I want my system off when I'm gone for awhile.

have you fixed the permissions?
if so, have you defragmented your HD(s)?
if so, have you cleaned the cache?
if so, I would recommend re-installing the system.
If the problem persists, I would assume that it might be power related...
BTW, the questions above serve as a guide for a basic maintenance

Just got done installing Panther this weekend, no problems yet...
I think it was some ical alarm schedule app that loaded at login, I removed it and turned it off in ical and the problem seemed to go away. I'm now using panther, on day 2 and still no problems, and I love panther so far!

The only reliable option to defrag your hard drive in OS X is Norton Speed Disk (believe it or not). TTP4 is DANGEROUS when it comes to defrag.
All that's going on here is that a program isn't quitting to let the thing log out. (probably loginwindow or WindowServer) This is not hardware related. You would likely get a better response in the OS X forum.
Also, you DON'T have to reboot your machine. Hold down the power button for about 5 seconds and it will shut down. BTW, if journaling is not on, turn it on.
