So, I've currently only got an iBook 500, but some time in the not so distant future I'll be getting a new machine. I'm tempted by a desktop, as G5s are only available in these at the moment, and even if G5PBs do come out in Jan they'll be out of my price range. So my question is:

If I get a desktop, is there a way to easily sync it with my laptop when I'm out and about? I know iSync does this for most mobile devices, but not for laptops unless I'm mistaken? There's no equivalent of Windows 'Briefcase' on OSX is there? So how does one keep the two machines synced?

[ perhaps this would have been better in a software forum on reflection. Oh well ]

I use Isync to Sync my G5 with my Palm, Ipod, and PowerBook
I'm not sure what you want to sync by my Contacts, Calendar, and bookmarks are the same. I also have an online copy with my .Mac account.

I believe you would need a .Mac account to make this work. That should be the next question....

I've got .Mac, and I'm aware that contacts and calendars can be synced, but what about documents? Do new and modified documents on your laptop get synced to your desktop when you use iSync?

iSync does not yet support syncing the home folder, which I wish it would. Maybe a future version, but nothing has been said on that topic. Some folks over at theApple Support Discussions were talking about this and it appears the only way to do it right now is with a third-party app.

ChronoSync is a $30.

Synk is $20 and offers a free demo.

Definetly. A desktop and a laptop gives you a lot of flexibility. I think the key is to know how to make you more productive. I for one, I have always liked to work in my office with a desktop. But my laptop is always with me on meetings around the office. The only thing I need to do is to plug in my usb drive and I carry back and forth the "in transit" files and I end up saving them on my laptop and desktop. I use a simple nomenclature on my files so I always know I have the latest version of the file.

I use SilverKeeper to sync all documents on my AluPB and DPG5, its easy and fast, and updates, adds and modifies all files that have been changed, updated ...

I love having a PB and a PM, all my data I can take with me at any time, anywhere ...

its definitly a great idea to have both you can sync them over your home network by mounting the networked drive and dragging and dropping files.

if you can afford to have both, then I recommend it!

(I don't sync anything appart from the work, and those reside in a diferent partition, and I do it manually, since the powerbook is just for testing, and meetings)

I think it is great if you can afford the "luxury" -- I just recently added a DPG5 to my 15" AluPB. I love it, but am having a hard time convincing myself that I "need" to keep both. Oh well...I might sell the 15"PB and get a 12"PB instead. That way I can "justify" having both since the 12" is a bit cheaper!

i completely agree you start to wonder the point of having both, but that one time when u are away on travel or your power goes out or anything that prevents you from using your desktop i am always so glad i got my powerbook(especially starting college in 2 months).

i use both machines a pwerbook g4 rev C and a g4 desktop. I work a lot in Final cut. the pwerbook is good for roughing things out but the desktop has the added stability and drivespace that is needed for complicated effects and colour correction. I rarely drop frames.

On Laptop + Deskop

Definitely, if you can afford it. Having a laptop is great for bringing "work" and stuff around, and top it off with Airport and you're bound to have a blast.

On Synchronizing Documents

There are a variety of applications you can use for that. Among them are:
- Lacie's SilverKeeper (free)
- DuOver ($20 shareware)
- FoldersSynchronizer (Shareware)
- Synchronize! X Plus (shareware)
- RsyncX (free)

I have had a laptop and desktop combo for years... I sync them using iSync.

I ususally go for a Powermac and Powerbook combination, although, at the moment, I have Dual G5 and G4 iBook.

If you can afford it, go for it, you'll never look back...
