I have a dual 2.5 that made a lot of noise when I got it, so I complained of course: result was a processor replacement within two weeks. All this is now just 6 weeks ago and the problem seems to return. I'd like to hear from you here what to expect from my liquid cooled dual 2.5. noise-wise that is.
This is wat I'm experiencing now: constant fan-blowing, some sort of low hum. This I find normaal, more or less. However, quite a few fans come on all the time, unless I run the machine at reduced speed and that's even when I load just a few tabs in the browser (with nothing else running). Now, is that normal?? I get the feeling the machine is way noisier than the dual 2.0, eventhough promised otherwise when bying the damn thing.
Thanks for your input!

All the fans will be on low speed all the time, but they should be rather quiet. The noisiest part of my G5 DP2.5 is the Superdrive. If your G5 DP2.5 fans sound like the Superdrive, then I'd say something is wrong. Have you tried running the hardware test CD? Are the fans noticeably noisier during the hardware test CD test? This is normal. If they sound about the same, something may be wrong. You could phone an Apple retail store to see if it is normal and if not calibrate the fans.

Mine is not silent in the least bit, but after running a dual 1.42 MDD it is incredible lol (that thing was a jet engine all the time)
I added the 6800 ultra last night and noticed very little difference (probably due to the location)
I originally had it on my desk next to my monitor, (about 18" from my head probably) it was a bit to loud for my tastes, so I moved it under the desk near my feet, no problems at all

It's the superdrive-like noise I'm talking about. No fun. Seems I need to have my machine checked again Thank for the feedback and suggestions.

I don't mean to make you feel worse, but I'm evaluating a 2.5DP at the moment and so far, I'm really impressed.
Slung under a desk, it's inaudible and gently whispers warm air out of the rear even when under heavy load for extended periods of time (batch video processing) averaging 170% processor utilization. Every 5 minutes or so, it will gasp - I mean, it will crank up with an (initially) deep whir building up to a Superdrive-like sound. This is by no means any louder than the real Superdrive reading a disc, and lasts 15-30 seconds before winding down again.
Maybe we received a good one, but as I said, I'm really impressed. Dealing with a number of Pentium and Opteron workstations from big name vendors, and having had a 2.0DP for some time, I was expecting a monster and definitely didn't expect it to be quieter than the 2.0DP. We also have a couple of MDD G4 units and they can howl up there with the 2.0DP when busy, but the new kid is really unobtrusive. I hope it stays that way!
Just my experience.... all the best with your unit.
