Hello, I have just made the big switch from windows to apple, and i am having problems. I bought a used G3 computer, and it came with OS 9.1 I have OS X, and I want to install it, but whenever I attempt to install OS X, it gets as far as the preparing to install screen, then i get a black screen that says installation unexpectedly quit. press enter to reset the computer. (error 0) Please help me with this problem I am having. I can not figure out what the problem is, I have tried different hard drives, and I know that can not be the problem, unless I have a formatting issue. Please help me. Thank you.

hmm, a few things.
first, welcome to mac and welcome to macnn
second, what type of G3 are you using? Is it beige or is it blue and white?
I am not positive but I think that installing OS X on the beige mac is complicated and may involve some type of hack. I could be wrong but I have a beiege G3 at home and have never tried going aove 9.2

The OS 9.1 HD may have some directory damage. If so, you can repair it from either OS 9 or the OS X Install CD.
If booted into OS 9: run the application Disk First Aid. It will be located in either:
/Mac HD/Utilities/Disk First Aid
-- or --
/Mac HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk First Aid
If booted into the OS X Install CD:
Check the Apple or File menu, one of them will have the option Disk Utility. This is a combination formatting and repair utility.
Alternatively, insert a fresh HD and allow the OS X Install CD to format it.
There is a small chance the OS X Install CD is itself damaged. Run the repair utilities on the Install CD if you like. They can't repair a CD obviously, but they can verify if there is damage.
Edit: SSharon is correct. If it's a beige G3, an OS X installation can get a lot more interesting.

woohoo I get something right.
to ask myself a question, can you install OS X on a hard drive in a G4 or whatever and then just transplant that HD back to a beige G3 or will that not work?

Yeah, installing on a beige can be done, but requires a bit of work. Due to limitations of the IDE controller, the hard drive has to be partitioned and OS X installed on the first 8 GBs of the hard drive. And make sure you have a ton of RAM as that will help your experience with OS X immensely.
Unfortunately, OS X 10.3 isn't supported on a beige, so you'll have to use a 10.2 disk.
And as for using a G4 to install OS X, I've heard it can be done, but you can run into trouble with the OS X install if you don't have the partitions set up correctly.
