i posted earlier and after a few peoples help got a bit further in the process only to hit another brick wall. heres and overview from another forum ('cos i can't be bothered to type it all out again):

'like a lot of people on here i've been trying to install x on a g3 with varying levels of success. its an old power pc with 64meg and 128meg modules of ram and two hard drives (one with 1.5 gig and with os 9.1 on it) and another with 4.5gig onto which i installed 10. after finding xpf i managed to install osx, though it stopped after disc one and i could only get it to restart in 9.1 by holding down 'option' at restart. its certainly installed but it just refuses to open. in verbose mode it goes through everything without any major hiccups and the last piece of text is 'firewall loaded succesfully' so i don't think thats whats hanging it up. it just doesnt go any further than that. any ideas? '

any ideas what to do next?

I think this should go in the OS X forum, as this question is really more about software than hardware.

I assume this is a Beige G3, since you are running XPostFacto. Are you running the right version of XPF? How much RAM do you have total? What kind of graphics card are you using?
