I'm a new Mac user (have only used it very infrequently before now) and I'm in the process of switching from WinXP. On the PC, when typing, I click home and end on the keyboard to just to the beginning and end of a line in a text box. When I click these keys on the Mac nothing happens. Do they not work in a text box like they do on a PC?

Welcome to Mac and welcome to MacNN.

Depending on what application you are in command-left/right arrow will move the cursor to the beginning or end of a line. The home and end keys are used to move to the very top or bottom of a document. Unfortunately some apps do not follow this so well, Microsoft Word being a notable exception. In Word 2004 the home and end keys move me to the ends of a line while in Textedit they do nothing.

My advice is to experiment and see what apps behave the way you are used to and which ones are different.

Hello!

Something you will love is the Option key. It gives you access to lots of characters that you couldn't get on a PC keyboard.

For example, you can get the copyright symbol (©) by tying Option and G. A bullet is Option and 8.

In TextEdit, go through the keyboard and find which keys do what. You can use Shift in combination too to find even more.

Accents can also be done this way. So to put a German umlaut (ü) on a letter, type Option and the letter U followed by the letter to have the umlaut.

Enjoy the Mac!
