Looking to upgrade my current setup: OS 10.2.8, 1.5 GB RAM, 80G HD, CD-RW.

Thinking about HD upgrade (120 GB WD Caviar w/ 8MB cache) and adding DVD±RW (Pioneer 107/108), about $200-220?

Another option is SATA controller + WD Raptor 37 GB drive (10k RPM) and just run OS 10.3.5 and apps on that drive and use existing drive for storage. $200 range.

Mainly looking for speed bump (to put off getting an iMac G5 or G5 tower!) but extra storage would be a plus. Will be using for graphics, lots of photoshop/indesign, and general use. Which would be the better solution? Opinions or other suggestions? Thanks.

the raptor drive will definitely make the machine feel a lot snappier. so i would recommend that and maybe a graphics upgrade. dunno what card you have or what the best card you can get but a gpu boost would be nice. the storage issue is up to you neither the extra hd, or the dvd burner will make the machine faster. but for scratch disks i like the maxtor 250 gig from new egg for bout 149.99? or something like that. much luck!

$580 for a Dual 1.2GHz upgrade. $430 for a single 1.47GHz upgrade. GigaDesigns.com
Closer to $200 for that GeForce 4 Ti, closer to $300 for a Radeon 9800 Pro.

yea my prices were a bit off. Would you go with the dual 1.2 or the single 1.47?

in actually, its a dual 1ghz and a single 1.25 that are certified to be overclocked.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I only have a 32MB Radeon(?) that was stock. Looking to do this cheaply. At some point, it doesn't make sense to upgrade this--just go the tower/imac g5 route. BTW, this would be my home machine.

Original thought: SATA + Raptor $200 range (I realize the DVD±R doesn't add speed)

$580 for Dual 1.25 + $200 for GeForce Ti + $200ish for the Raptor/SATA card = $980. Can use this setup with my current 17" Studio Display

New iMac g5 20" loaded around $2000ish. Speed comparison btw this and upgrades above? Decisions, decisions.

------

FYI Mafia, finally got the dual 2.0 G5 installed at work: 1MB RAM (hopefully upgrade soon), Radeon 9600, 160 GB, wireless KB/Mouse, + 20" Cinema Display and whole suite of current apps-Creative Suite, macromedia Studio MX, QX6.1, etc! Awesome setup. I'm in love with my machine again. Makes me really want to bite the bullet and go for similar at home!

the imac i think will be faster then the machine you currently have. but there is virtually no expandability and i am not a big fan of the current video card. and yes it is a sweet setup, i do a lot of photoshop work as well as my daily computer routines and i absolutely love it. i was upgrading from a powerbook g4 867mhz 12". don't get me wrong i still love it but its nice to be able to do work on my powerhouse and then for portable tasks switch to the book.

I would rather have a dual 1.25 G4 with a G4 TI and cinema display than a G5 imac.
