We just got a G5 (yay!) and want to use our G3 for the kids to do games and stuff. My husband took it all apart to get it ready to move to another room without remembering that I want to get some files off of it by using the ethernet connection. I put it back together but when it boots up now the cursor is frozen in the top left hand corner and no caps or number lock lights come on on the keyboard. I thought it was a problem with the chord that had some nibbling on it by our rabbit so I went and got a new keyboard but to no avail. Any ideas? I guess I can give up the files I wanted to transfer but it was a great computer for the kiddos and my dh doesn't want to let them near the new one.
thanks,
ddand

This morning I decided to plug the mouse directly to the computer and it will move but only vertically. Hope to hear from someone soon on this. :-)

First, look at the plugs on the mouse and keyboard. I had a problem with keyboard and mouse that ultimately turned out to be bent pins. Next, try a different keyboard and mouse. It's a long shot, but maybe it's the mouse and keyboard that are hosed, not the motherboard.
If it is the motherboard, you might consider switching to USB. You could get a cheap USB card, keyboard, and mouse (probably all for less than $100). I know from experience that Belkin's USB card works in a G3 (including with the Rev A ROMs) under OS X. You'll lose the keyboard on-off button, but you'd still be able to use the computer.
Or, you could get a whole new refurbed G3 for $199 from Sun Remarketing, and probably a lot less from other sources.

Even better, get an external Firewire and/or USB enclosure, remove the drive from your G3, and pop it into the enclosure. Now you can access all your files from the G5, plus you have a handy external disk.

So, eyadams, you're saying that I would be able to use my computer with a USB keyboard and mouse? I have a USB card already . I will try this option first since I want to have it for the kids to use still.
Thanks,
ddand

You should be able to, yes. If the USB keyboard has a power button, it won't work, and I've read that ctrl-option-esc to force quite applications doesn't work either. But I haven't tried any of this myself, so I can't confirm.
Since you have all the pieces (i.e. the card, and you can borrow the keyboard and mouse from your G5), its definately worth a shot.
