Hi,

Looking to get a new mac in January, after the Mac Show in San Francisco, in case there are any new announcements.

At the moment my budget will stretch to the dual 1.8, but does anyone think that:

The dual 2.0 will replace the dual 1.8 AND Apple will up the standard video card to say a 9600XT at or about the same price point?

In the end, I guess it doesn't really matter as my budget will only allow me to buy whatever machine is in that "slot" at the time, but just wondered what the general consensus of opinion is.

If anyone can take the time to reply, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Matthew

My Tea leaves say " Wait till the end of Feb. 05" or you will be sorry. By then we should see an upgrade to the G5 line as well as know when Tiger will ship.

After reading about the new XServe promo, I bet Apple updates the XServe as well. 2.3GHz maybe?

I can't imagine Apple introducing a new PM until later--they may not even have sufficient stock of the 2.5 until the end of the year, though they've come close to clearing out all of the backorders. I expect them to have enough machines to actually fulfill all of their orders by the end of the year--unless its an entirely new processor from IBM that they're able to manufacture better, I can't see anything other than a 2.5 for the next 4 months--but that's just speculation.

Your logic is solid, however we're talking an upgrade to the Bottom end GHz wise not the TOP.

I wish people would search the forum, because there have been multiple threads on this topic.

They won't upgrade the bottom without having a new top end machine (i.e. They won't just eliminate the 1.8 GHz machines until they have something better than the 2.5 GHz machines).

Thats probably very true.
I can see a speed bump in the G5, but it's gonna be while... I doubt we'll see 3Ghz until mid late '05. Dual Core will be next and it's gonna run at the same speeds.. The manufacturing process is what's keeping speeds at bay.

The max length between the update should be 8 months. I imagine MacWorld SF will spotlight the PowerBooks though we'll likely see PMs in febuary.
