I'm thinking of getting one of these machine's and wondering if it's significantly quiter than the Duals or the old SP machine due to it not having any CPU fans, has anyone heard one of these machines in a quite room, and are they able to make a comparison to other G5's (e.g dualies).
General performance reports would be great too.

Maybe I missed something but where did you hear that the single G5 1.8Ghz PowerMac doesn't have a CPU fan? I'd be surprised if it doesn't!

I have a first generation single processor 1.8 G5, and there is no fan on the processor.

I can't compare it to any of the DP machines, but it is significantly quieter than my "Beige" G3. Most of the time, the CDROM and the hard drive make more noise than the fan, and that's even when I'm playing Halo.

Just to clarify, the new SP 1.8 does have a CPU fan, but only the rear (exhaust) fan. The previous machines have both a front/intake and rear/exhaust CPU fan.

Thanx for clarifying Al G, I used to have a TRev A SP G5 1.8 (I8 ram slots) and that did have 1 fan before the CPU heatsink (and two after as per the duals) and was still quite noisy (for me at least anyway).
I'm buying a machine this weekend and really need to know just how quite the SP 1.8 really is compared to the other G5's (I also have expereince of a Dual 2.0 G5) when Idle and when running at "reduced performance" with little to no load.
If it's similar to the fully fanned G5's I'll go with an G5 iMac.

I have a new G5 1.8 SP with 1.25G of RAM. Everything is stock except for the addition of a 250Gb Maxtor hard drive.

The machine is very quiet. During normal websurfing, mailing, wordpro, itunes etc. the fans never speed up. During gameplay (UT2004, Call of Duty), the fans don't speed up either.

They only time they seem to speed up is during a restart.

Compared to my old G4 iMac (original 800Mz), this machine is, if anything, just a touch louder, but still very quiet. Sorry, I can't compare it to other G5's.

Good luck.
