My brother's 1ghz eMac (about 9 months old) sometimes doesn't want to start up properly. You push the power button and get a chime but the sreen stays black and nothing happens. It took him 5 attempts to start it last night - any idea what this could be? He's on 10.3.5.

Mine did that and Apple had to replace the analog display unit and the logic board. Call Apple and let me know how you make out.

Why shut it down as opposed to letting it sleep?

I'm going to replace the PRAM battery as a precaution and check the RAM is seated OK. He's about to get broadband so I don't think he'll be shutting it down much in the future anyway.
