Hi All,

My G5's boot drive has had a fatal attack of the bads (I can't be sure, but OSX 10.3.6 had been on the machine for a day or so before things started to go sour). Much work has been done to get it back up and running so that it'll boot the machine properly, but the time has come to reformat and reinstall (I even broke down and called Apple, and they gave up).

fyi: why this drastic step? Well, I did a archive and reinstall of OSX (once Disk First Aid and Disk Warrior failed to resurrect the proper functioning of the disk), but the machine now has periods where I just get the beach ball (every five minutes or so, and the ball spins for up to 5 minutes). I'm going to copy over everthing, reformat, and then only copy over my data and reinstall every app from scratch, just to be sure (arrrgh!)

To do the job, I've got a very large external disk that uses Firewire 800, and a 12" PowerBook.

Would I be right in thinking that I can maximise the transfer of the data from the internal G5 drives (there are two: the boot drive at 250Gb, and a second one at 200Gb) to the external firewire 800 drive by connecting the external drive to the G5, and then connecting the G5 to the PowerBook in firewire transfer disk mode, and then move data from the internal G5 drive to the external fw 800 drive while they're both mounted on the PowerBook's desktop? (the G5 will boot, but I really don't want to risk the beachball problem causing data corruption).

A second question: if I do use the configuration described above, how do I manage to ensure that all of the various invisible files get transferred? I usually use CarbonCopy when copying a boot disk, but that usually running on the Mac in question (in this case, the G5 isn't actually a G5, it's just a hard disk).

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Chas

The 12" does not do Firewire 800.

You could install OSX to an external drive, and then boot holding down T to target the external drive.
