A few days ago, I noticed a slight buzzing noise emitting from the bottom of the front of my 1.6 GHz G5. I've read about Power Supply fan problems in dual processor machines, but I thought they were confined to dualies. Has anyone with a single processor machine had this fan problem? Any solutions that don't involve shipping the machine to Apple?

Also, is there any danger to the machine if I just leave it alone? The noise isn't too irritating, so if it's a choice between dealing with the noise and losing the computer for a week, I'd prefer to just deal with the noise, assuming it won't hurt the machine.

Buzzing might can be solved be reseating the fans. Basically, just remove the fans, and then put them back into place. If you can isolate which fan is causing the trouble, maybe give it a little massage or extra attention. Make the offending fan feel loved.

A grinding or variable type of noise is more indicative of impending fan failure. Whether you can just source your own replacement fan from a place that sells PC parts I don't know, I doubt it, the whole hardware set-up and design is pretty much proprietary.

Werd. I just took my dual G5 in for a possible CPU failure, I think the machine will be gone about 2 weeks total, due to Thanksgiving. I get the impression that the Apple Store stocks very few, if any parts, so, if it's a hardware problem, they have to send it off.

Hmm... Reseating the fan seems to have fixed it. Thanks. (not sure why I didn't try that earlier.)
