http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgr...=Show+Upgrades
lists all the cpu upgrades avaible. OWC i believe just came out with new upgrades with larger cache's and lower prices.
which do you prefer, and which do you despise? and why?
any input is much appreciated.
thank you

I put a Giga Designs 1.2 card in my old Sawtooth a year ago, and it's been perfectly stable. Their prices are a good bit better than Powerlogix and Sonnet, and I've read quite a few service and support nightmares with both of those brands.
You'll want to chech to see whether the mother board in that thing is dual CPU compatible before you contemplate a dualie card. Earlier ones aren't, later ones are. There's a link to a utility on the item info page for the dual cards there on OWC's site.

Im also considering a processor upgrade, and Im tempted to go with the OWC over the Giga. Giga is in some pretty serious legal trouble, and could potentially go under soon.

i have also heard of support issues with the sonnet and powerlogix, i am leaning tword either the OWC or the giga designs, i like the fact that i can get close to 1ghz for around 250. :-) does anyone have any test results like benchmarks or something similar? the last time i upgraded an older mac i pumped quite a bit of cash into a beige G3 and even with a 500MHZ g4 that thing was incredibaly slow, damn you 66 mhz bus. while the sawtooth only has a 100mhz bus i am hoping it will be quick with the video card, ram, a sata drive and a 1ghz cpu.
thanks all

Don't bother with a SATA drive in this system. You'd need a PCI interface card, which costs as much as another drive or two. Today's drives do not give much benefit by running on SATA instead of ATA-100, or even on your Sawtooth's native ATA-66.
If you want maximum drive performance and cost is not an object, get this drive. You will need the Intech Hi-Capacity driver to support more than 128 GB. The resulting combination will saturate the ATA-66 bus across perhaps the first half of the drive, after that the drive's native speed should fall below ATA-66 speeds. An interface card would only allow slightly faster HD performance across the first part of the drive.

Hi,
I've got the Powerlogix Dual 1.3 GHz Upgrade in my Sawtooth 400 and it runs very well. You can notice that in the start up and apps like iTunes, iMovie or iDVD. I would only know one reason for despising an upgrading: pricing. Otherwise they are pretty similar I think.

My first upgrade was a Gigadesigns my second was an OWC. They both installed and performed flawlessly. I'd recommend OWC's at this point.

I got an OWC upgrade (pushed my aging gigabit ethernett 400 MZ machine to 933 MZ) last winter. It was very easy (I made my husband do it after I got the machien all opened up) and the OWC tech support, on a saturday no less, was superb. (I had a question on the jumpers; the directions were a little unclear and I'm pretty anal when it comes to my computer's innards). I would highly recommend OWC. It's a great company, I think.
And you'll love the difference in your computer, but the way.

FastMac makes OWC's upgrades. They're identical.
