Is it bad that I installed a HD in my Sawtooth's 3.5" bay?

My Superdrive has been having issues. (Slow mounting, wants to close right after it opens). iTunes will sometimes allow it to open and remain open, sometimes not. Sometimes it will crash iTunes for even trying. I tend to think its a software problem, rather than a hardware one. I was wondering in heat from the (rarely used) new drive just below the superdrive could be causing problems for the Superdrive, or if this might just be a case of a driver going sour, or even more simply, iTunes acting up. I'd like to hear any opinions on this. Thanks.

I don't think the HD is causing this problem but it seems that only way to check is to remove it (or just unplug it) for a while and see if the problem persists. Try that and if you still have problems with the superdrive (it might just be old age) let us know. Worst case is that the drive is going bad and a new 16x one will cost you 75 bucks or so.

I'm going to play around with it a little with a new user, and see if I get similar problems. If they persist I'll unplug it for a while, and see what happens. I don't mind too much if the drive goes out, I just want to be sure thats what's really happening. Prices sure have gone down since I bought this one.

Have you double-checked your jumpers? I've had no problems running a hard drive under the optical drive. However, I wasn't using that hard drive as a boot disk.

I've refrained from installing HDDs in the 3.5" bay because there is zero air circulation. Fast drives can get rather hot in there. Learned that the hard way.

That bay is intended for a ZIP drive, not a Hard Drive.
You are definitely in need of a session of chastisement.

I've had no problems with mine, but I also removed the stupid flip-down drive door for the DVD burner because the cooling vent is right at the front. If that's blocked, BAM! your burner will overheat and die. Chances are, your Superdrive's dead, just like my first Pioneer A06.

doh. thanks for the input. Gotta figure out how to set my hard drives up, so that one isn't in that bay anymore. Can one purchase a 3 split IDE ribbon?
Man, for a bay not designed for a HD, that thing sure fit in there perfectly. Dang it. Guess I know what I'm getting my wife for Christmas.

3 split? What do you mean? IDE ribbons have only two varieties: The kind set up for one device, and the kind set up for two.

That answers my question. It looks like I need to get an ide cable with longer sections after the split. I need it to reach to the cd drive and to the harddrive section.

If you get an IDE cable designed for a full-ATX case it should be long enough, however you may have an uncomfortable amount of slack. The Apple cables are pretty specific in length.
