Will a Radeon 9800 Mac Edition increase MPEG2 HD video performance on a Dual 1Gig MDD?

Since VLC is the only app that can playback HDTV transport streams (.ts) I am trying to figure out a way to increase frame rate performance.

Will the 9800 increase this or is the performance only determined by the CPU???

Bummer...

What about the GeoFroce Ti 4 ??? Does this card have hardware accelartation for HDTV streams?

I really don't want to get a PC just for HD viewing but it seems that the solutions on the PC are a lot simpler. Darn it to hell.

nv40 (Geforce 6800 GT / ultra) is what you need.

not sure if it works on G4 though.

if you put a 6800 in your machine (I dont even think it would work), it will be CPU bottlenecked like a madman. Hell, even a Radeon 9700 or Geforce4 Ti will be CPU bottlenecked. Don't waste your money on a 6800.

The 6800 WILL NOT work period. It will only work on the G5's.

The Geforce4 Ti will work since it was a BTO order on the Dual Gig when I first bought my computer. The only thing I can't figure out if it has hardware accelaration for HD playback. The Nvidia site shows that it has it for Quicktime playback but HD files are not handled via the Quicktime API's and I don't think that VLC handles hardware accelaration.

The Geforce4 Ti is still available for about $300 and that is still a little high for a 2 year old card. So I figure that it may have the accelaration.

I may just have to buy a PC HD card and use my old Celeron to output HD since the HD card handles all the work.

I have played test streams of HD content my brother has captured with his EyeTV 500 and played them back on my 933 with a Geforce4 Ti, and they play pretty darn well. There is the occasional dropped frame bc my cpu is slow. You should be able to find the 4ti for ~200-250.
