Whilst trying to run techtool deluxe yesterday from the CD i couldnt get my mac to restart from the CD, i left it for 20 mins at the stage where you have the grey icon and the spinning thing? eventually i had to turn the power off as there was no response or anything. As this seemed weird i then thought maybe i should run disk first aid so i pooped the disc in but it just kept spitting it out. I got on the phone to apple (god knows where the call centre is, India maybe as the guy had a very strong accent which i struggled to understand over a poor line) after 30 mins and an unsuccesful attempt to reset the PRAM? he suggested that i needed a wired keyboard and mouse in order to fix the problem. When i said i only had the bluetooth KB and mouse he suggested i go and buy one! As i balked at this he said i would have to take it in to be repaired, initially he he suggested somewhere 75 miles away he had no idea where i live geographically. Eventually found a place 30mins away.
On arrival they tried two discs and diagnosed that the superdrive was f**ked, their words not mine.
They have ordered a new one and hope to have it back with me tommorow.
So has anyone else had a superdrive die on them?

I had this same problem the other day, I tried to run techtool from the disk and it just sat there and the fans came on full blast, really loud! I forced it to restart took the disk out and started it up, my superdrive still works, it does seem to make weird noises but it works fine. The thing I hate is the fact that we pay extra for a wireless keyboard and mouse and there is no included wired keyboard. This wouldn't piss me off except for the fact that you can't fun FSCK diagnostics in single user mode without one! Apple should have a cable that is included that could be attached to the wireless keyboard just in case. Hopefully, my superdrive will continue to function properly. Good luck with your new one.
