I'm wondering what settings people out there are finding effective for optimizing the overall responsiveness of their dual G5 systems. Beyond maxing RAM and updating video cards, I'm talking about system settings and system maintenance habits that keep a machine moving bits as fast as possible. I have High Performance selected under Energy Saver, of course, and I correct permissions about every 2 weeks.

What else are people here doing?

I just leave the processor performance on Automatic. I set the CPU to Never Sleep (allowing the monitor to go to sleep, of course) so that the Mac regularly runs the maintenance scripts. I make sure to repair permissions before and after installing new software. That's about it, really, for anything major.

Not sure if this makes any difference but, for OS upgrades, I prefer to download the file to my Mac, rather than have Software Update handle the install. Not sure why. Just makes me feel better, I guess.

If you don't keep your PowerMac on all the time, you should run the Cron scripts via Onyx or Cocktail. Also, a backup of either your data files or everything every so often wouldn't hurt either depending on what the system is used for.
