At work on a quicksilver G4 800, the CD drive will not read in OS 9 or X (10.3). The system has been playing up and I was about to reinstall OS X. I've come to open the system CD now and it isn't there. I've put the eject menu menu extra on and it says No Drives in greyed out text, the System Profiler and Lacie Silverlining only sees the hard drive on the ATA bus. Whats going on and what can be done???!!!

Problem solved, but I don't know how. I shut down, opened the side, all the connections were good, so I closed it and booted up again and it works now.

The same thing happened again today, the CD in the drive disappeared from the desktop, eject button did nothing. Shut down computer for a few minuted and restarted and it came back. Any idea what would be causing this? The system had been reinstalled after it happened yesterday.

Try swapping the drive and the cable to see if that makes the problem go away. The idea is to isolate it being a motherboard issue (IDE controller going south) or the drive (more likely).
