The same thing happened on my new 20" iMac. I called SmallDog Electronics where I bought it, and they told me they had the same problem with their floor model.
Solution. Shut down the computer. Unplug computer. Plug it back in and restart.

It worked. Be sure to go through the Bluetooth setup assistant.
