Will Apple release an improved version of the G5 iMac at MWSF? Just wondering, as I have a friend who is thinking of buying after the holidays, and I told him to wait until after the MWSF just in case. He really likes the iMac, but HATES the vram on it. Yes he is a PC user who is sick of all of the viruses and hard aches with PCs. He wants to use this as a home machine for Internet/Games/Office Apps etc. Should he consider a tower since he has a monitor already??
Just some questions he is asking and I thought I would see what the Mac Faithful has to say!
Thanks

Apple usually does not comment on upgrades before they happen, but it is a possibility. The model is still fairly recent, so there's an equally good chance that nothing will happen.

I hate to say this to your friend, but if he or she is interested in gaming, it may not be the best idea for him or her to even get a Mac. PC gaming is more vibrant, and some titles customers get on the PC never reach the Mac platform or take a good while in the process. Now, your friend also has a monitor, and if he or she is adamant about switching to Macs despite the games difference, it makes sense to buy a tower. The single processor PowerMac G5, at $1499, shares the iMac's GPU, but it can be upgraded to something better.

It's very unlikely that the iMac will be updated at MWSF. It's still a fairly new machine that is selling extremely well. If the machine is updated now, it won't have a new GPU, as there is no other chip that is likely to rplecae it (do a search on "iMac Graphics" and you'll see a million threads on this).

If he has a good monitor, I'd recommend the low-end Powermac upgraded with a better GPU. Also note that the current iMac performs better than you might expect, considering its GPU - I run it at 1440*900 on anything except UT2004.

The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

I don't suspect we'll see a new iMac until the U4L northbridge is ready.
