i dont want to spend the extra $$$ for FW case for the DVR-108, and i really dont use iDVD or iMovie, so i dont care about that. and i dont burn from iTunes either... i just use Roxio Toast.

is it possible to replace the 105 with a 108 and have everything working perfectly?

The only issue is that the Apple software doesn't support it. Otherwise, you have to take off the front plate AND the plate on the front of the drawer.

You need heatsink grease if you are going inside your iMac. There are two places on your machine where Apple has a black thermal compound. Scrape this off and apply the heatsink grease.
