Wanted to get an IPOD this Christmas and I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew...

Current computer is a slot loading IMAC G3 with 400Mhz processor and 128 mb RAM. Currently running OS 9.04.

I found out I need to upgrade to OSX and I may need to add more RAM. What else am I in for? I understand Panther won't run the Classic mode unless I have 9.2 - is this true? Will I need to buy 9.2 just to run my old applications in OSX?

Am I smoking crack here thinking I can make this work or will it be better to give this to the kids and go shopping for a new Mac?

Thanks for any help.

OS 9.2 is a free download from Apple's site for anyone who has 9.0 or 9.1. Once you install OS X, you probably won't ever need to use Classic again (in my experience). Classic was useful to ease the transition to OS X before there were many OS X native apps available. Now it's hardly needed.

You will need more RAM for sure, another 256 or 512 (better) will be just the ticket.

why would you need ram?
It will run very slow but this guy seems to just want to use an ipod. I would recommend ram but it is not required.

Thanks for the replies so far. The computer gets used for all sorts of family functions but mostly for surfing the web, email, and MS Office stuff. Adding the IPOD is new.

So, with the OSX ($129) and the added RAM ($100) - I'm still wondering if it will be worth it if the computer runs too slow.

I agree with MacAddict-- RAM seems to make all the difference in OS X. I have a G3/333 and a former G4/400 under OS X and both were surprisingly quick with a decent amount of RAM.

$129 is too much for OS X 10.3. OWC sells it for $68 unboxed, or on DVD for $49 . Or if you know a college student, they can purchase the boxed retail version for $69 at Apple online or Apple in-store with a student ID.

Muchas Gracias for the information. At this point, I've upgraded to 9.2 successfully and ordered 512 mb of extra RAM, which will be here by Wednesday. In the meantime, I'll go shopping for Panther.

Hopefully, I'll be spending Christmas afternoon learning the IPOD rather than trying to fix the computer. Thanks again.

Happy Holidays!
