These are Paul you know whos words. I like them both, design wise. But the G5 is just a better computer. I just read Paul Thurrotts new tiddbit on how Apple lost its way and how the iMac is crap blah blah. I won't bother with a link because thats what he likes, but I will give you this little paragraph: Discuss..

I won't belabor the point by moving through all of Apple's products since 1998. Instead, I'd like to focus on the iMac, which should have always been the all-in-one successor to the original Mac. The second generation iMac, however, bore no resemblance at all to the first generation iMac, or to any Mac that preceded it. Instead, the second generation iMac was an over-designed, overly-expensive engineering oddity, the type of thing a first year graphics arts student would come up with when asked to design a computer of the future. By actually making such a radically designed computer, Apple ensured that the second generation iMac would never sell as well as the first, because it had to be so expensive. More problematic, it's bizarre and tightly-packed half-dome base unit would prove to be too restrictive for the heat-happy G5 processors that were coming down the pike. So another expensive redesign was in order.

He goes on to bash the G5 iMac: "one ad says. "Where did the computer go?" another asks, as if there were any doubt that the two-inch thick computer-in-a-screen more than just a flat-panel display." Oh Really, well every PC users I know saw that and was rather amazed that the entire thing was in that sleek case, unlike Dells All-In-One that looks like... well crap and screams PC bolted onto the back of the screen.

If you want the link I can post it, but for a guy that just bashes Apple at every turn he sure loves too write about them. I really don' know where he was going with this article he wants a old G3 iMac case with G5 guts.. I don't know. Guess hes just an iDiot who will never get it.

When you say "Paul" do you mean Paul Thurrott?

No offense, but he is a Mac hater. His Internet Nexus ( http://www.internet-nexus.com/ ) is nothing more then a Pro Microsoft... Windows zealot. He is on par with John Dvorak who constantly says that Apple is dying and has been doing so for the past decade.

I'm not going to say they always lie when reporting on Apple news (it's no trade secret that Apple isn't the #1 computer manufacturer), but rather they have a very one sided perspective that isn't always in tune with reality. The iPod is a major hit, but he refuses to accept that Apple has created a cultural phenomenon (rather similar to the portable CD player or the Cassette Player).

He also is in denial that iPod users are considering Macs... which they are. Apple isn't dying... and their base is very strong.

The problem with Thurrott is not that he's completely wrong, it's that he almost always puts a negative spin on Apple-related discussions with little to no supporting evidence.

The iMac G4 statement was somewhat right: it did cost Apple more to make, and the dome enclosure was too specialized. The G5 version is probably Apple's most practical iMac design ever. That's part of why it costs $1499 for a 17" Superdrive model when the G4 equivalent used to cost $1799, even though there's a faster CPU inside.

There are many reasons why there was a $300 price drop. For one thing, it weighs less, can come in a smaller box, there is no neck assembly, and the G5 iMac is almost two years older then the G4 iMac...

Paul tends to play the Apple Doomsday card at every turn. He demands finite proof that the Mac is doing well, but will generalize when he hears negative information. He also thought the iPod was a passing phase... That's been proven wrong.

actually he's wrong about another thing.

The second generation iMac's were the slot loaders.

The THIRD generation were the iMac G4's

We are now on the fourth generation.

he is also wrong about the price. the tray loaders (after the bondi blue and before the slot loaders) were $1300, the same price as the lamp style imac. prices across the board have been steadily going down.
