A friend asked me to look at his imac problem - it can't find a system on start-up.
The imac is a white dome model number M6498. 700mHz/256mb/40HD with 15" lcd.
It was delivered to me so I plugged everything in and started up. Sure enough the disc icon with flashing question mark appeared. I intended to then start up from a cd but I couldn't get the cd tray to open. Then after about 5 minutes the thing just shut down. It would not start up again. I tried unplugging all cables and re-connecting but no luck. It refuses to start up. Any ideas please.

You should be able to open the CD tray by starting up with the mouse clicker held down.

Try unplugging the computer and leaving it unplugged for 30 minutes or so. Plug it back in and see if you get any power. I know this works with the eMacs.

Thanks guys for your response. The power problem was due to a fractured mains cable giving intermittent power. Once I fixed this I managed to get the imac going after couple of hours sweat.
