The startup chime on my MDD is way too loud.

Is there a way to mute this in OS X? I know I could just plug in a pair of headphones every time I startup, but I usually turn my computer on in the morning after I get up and I am not the most alert at this time. The chime is really unsettling to hear this early!

You could write an Applescript that sets the system volume to mute at shutdown, then another script could reset it back at startup. I'd thought about writing such a thing... but I rarely ever do restarts these days. Only when I do a system update.

There's a lot of software that does this. My favorite is this one .

Ever since I got a pci sound card for my tower, the startup chime was played from the internal speaker (as I no longer had external speakers attached to the built-in sound card's line-out) and it was super-loud and annoying. This lets me mute or decrease the volume of the chime.
