Did the price just go down on the 20" montitors? Apple has them listed at $999 now. With the rumors of the headless iMac coming out. This might be the way to go for instead of the 20" G5.
Or am I going crazy???

I think to make it all work, Apple would also need to sell a 17" LCD as well. I'm thinking something in the $350 - $450 range.
But good point... $999 20" LCD plus a $500 CPU basically makes a headless iMac.

I agree 100%.

Sounds almost right: $1500 will get you either a G4 1.25 GHz 20" iMac mini or a G5 1.8GHz 17" iMac with some other goodies. It's either screen space or power.
Of course Apple could fumble if they chose to put VGA instead of DVI on the iMac mini. However, that would be an incredibly stupid decision because it would drive all potential screen sales away from Apple. But, considering the eMac, iMac and iBook all only offer VGA, you wonder if Apple would offer DVI on their ultra-cheapest...

I'm very happy to see Apple responding to the competition in this category. Our company had to recently purchase 4 wide-screen 20" LCDs and I was forced to buy Dell 20.1" wide screen LCDs because of the price difference. The Dell's sell for $599 (as of 1/6/05, but price seems to change on a daily basis on this unit) for an LCD that is very comparable to Apple's LCD.
I'm assuming the price difference is because Dell ships more units than Apple. Unfortunately, the price difference was just too great to justify the sleeker outlines of the Apple LCD.
I think my powerbook is offended by having to be connected to the Dell LCD

Yah, that's not a bad price... considering I could get dual monitors for $200 more then a single Apple display.

My thinking was that the only thing holding me back for the G5 is the lack of upgrade-ability and the nice 20" screen that will go to waste after the computer becomes obsolete. I am hoping the mini will be more upgradeable than the all-in-one. I know I could get the towers, but I don't see the value in price difference.

You folks keep talking about this Dell monitor for under $600, but every single time I hit the site they want $749. What's up with that?

Add it to your cart and somedays the price will drop. Also some days (most of the time) Dell has coupons floating on the net for $50 off $200 purchase and so on....if used with the price drop of adding it to your cart you'll see a big savings. Here's a secret go to passwird.com and scroll till you see the display. Stay shhhhhush about it too .

I don't agree. I think the iMac/eMac mini should be exactly like the iMac/eMac just minus the monitor. If you need the pro features, you should buy a PowerMac.
I do agree with your statement of the monitor not aging as fast as the computer itself. That's my #1 fear. Or what if you LOVE the monitor, but the computer always has issues. It's basically all or nothing.

I agree but you gotta admit that Apple making some of the hardware user installable was a step in the right direction. Hopefully this low end Mac will have room to be upgraded.
