What I like about this new mac is that it's going to drive pre-owned G4 iMac prices down. I don't already own a monitor, so it's not such a great deal for me. But a nice lamp-looking thing on the desk with a G4 would fit the bill nicely.
Any thoughts on the matter?

I'm in exactly the same place: I have an 17" / 800 iMac G4, and this could seriously be a replacement. Considering I have a cheap PC that I've always wanted to easily use with a monitor (switch between my Mac and the Windows box occasionally), this could be a great thing for me. But what's the ideal monitor to go with it? I'd like a 19" (or 20") LCD monitor that takes up less room than my lamp shade iMac.
But any LCD I get will not be as flexible as my lamp shade iMac's screen. Plus, when I trick out the mac mini, it would only have 512MB. I can't tell if I can upgrade it to 1GB myself... I don't want to spend $450 to have Apple do it.
What a conundrum... I may go with an iMac G5, I'm just not sure. I'd like to use my Windows box with the monitor, though, and I can't do that with an iMac G5.

That's two votes for iMac 800/17" being worth around $500. From a buyer's perspective, I hope that sentiment is common!

I've always purchased the ultra low end PowerMac educational option (usually lower then the normal PowerMac setups) and I've got a few screens to connect it to.
I'm really considering a Dell 20" wisdescreen LCD and a Mac mini... considering it would be less then $1100

Eh? The Dell monitor is, on sale, $690. The Mini is $500. Thats nearly $1200. I'd rather get a 17" iMac at that price.
The mini is for people that already have a nice monitor. I have a 20" Viewsonic and Wireless Mouse/Keyboard setup on my PC. The Mini would be compatible with both, and just "swaps" for the HP.

Space saver? Your computer is the base of your display. How does the mini+display+power brick save you space??

And what lunatic at Apple decided on charging $450 for the 1GB upgrade?
PC2700 is going for $155 or so for a gig stick. Even for Apple that's a bit freaking steep. More people would let Apple install it for $250. Seems like a lost gouge opportunity on App's part.
But, I'm not complaining..I'll do it myself later. Today, we got the machine we've been yamming about all these years.
Good times.
