I noticed on the Mac mini page that it works with Apple's DVI to S-video / composite adapter, previously offered only for G5 PowerMacs. I have a couple of questions:
Does DVI ordinarily have the signals this is using to generate analog video output? The fact that only Apple appears to sell such an adapter makes me think they're doing something non-standard with their DVI ports.
If the mini can use this, why can't older G4 macs with DVI outputs? Is it just because those machines can't detect the video mode and adjust accordingly, or again, is it maybe due to non-standard DVI on mini and G5?
Would ATI's (does anyone else make one) DVI-to-Component adapter work with mini? ( http://www.ati.com/products/hdtvadapter/)

DVI does not have any provision for s-video and composite video, nor for component video, so all of those are non-standard implementations. Only graphics cards designed to output those non-standard signals when they detect the plug adapter will work.

The word I got from ATI on the DVI->Component converter they sell is that it does not work on any Apple OEM ATI product. They did hint that 3rd party converters should work, but will cost more as they have to transcode either the DVI or VGA signal into component.

Apple sells one for $19.
linky
This one's a refurb, but it's just a cable for <bleep> sake.
It says it is for the PM G5 only, but I thhink the Mac mini supports it and the page hasn't been updated.

That would be the one I referred to in the original post. My question was whether this would work with other G4s and if there were a similar component video adapter, and it appears the answer is no to both.
