My Sony 21" Trinitron is having spasms. Sometimes (at least once a day), the image starts, uh, 'hiccuping', accompanied by a clicking sound. After this goes on for a few minutes, there will be a distinctive 'popping' sound, and the image will dissapear. I turn the monitor off and on, and the image reappears, perfectly stabalized. It could be several hours between 'episodes'.

Come to think of it, I've been noticing this really only since I got my new PM G5. But I doubt it could be the G5, since the video card hasn't changed (a retail 9800 I moved over from my old PM G4). Maybe just freaky timing on the monitor's part.

What do you think, is the monitor starting to flake out on me? I bought it about 2.5 years ago. Seems like a rather short life.

That doesn't sound good at all, and 2.5 years isn't great either for longevity. I would think a Sony like that would come with a 3 year warranty. Send it in!!

Does anyone else think this might be caused by the fact that you are running an agp4x card in a agp 8x slot?

No, AGP cards and slots are interchangeable, together they will run at the lowest common denominator of the slot and card.

Yeah, I would say that audible distress sounds coming from the monitor means its on its last legs. Of course, I thought my 17" Studio Display was nearly dead months ago because of its geometry switching, yet I'm still on it now. But that problem sounds a lot less severe than the one you're contending with. I would be prepared to install a new monitor.

I had a KDS time ago (with trinitron technology)... and it had like small "shorts" .. it had the same symptoms. I took it in to a local repair shop and they couldn't do anything to fix it. I couldn't send it back to the factory because of two things.. I had to pack it and send it in the US (I'm in Mexico now) and the pricks from KDS just went deaf when I tried to contact them.. hence I had to buy a new monitor. I advice you call Sony and see what they can do.

good luck
