Hi all,

I have a Rev. C imac which I upgraded with an iMaxpowr 500mhz G3 cpu about 3 years ago, and it ran like clockwork. Then I got a G5 and never used it again. Now I want to give it away, so I wiped the hard drive (40gb Seagate) and reinstalled a clean version of 9.2.2, however, now when I look at the system profiler, it says there is a 66mhz processor in it? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Before you think its something serious, make sure it isn't something stupid.

Is it definitely the processor speed reading at 66MHz and not the system bus. Does the processor upgrade need drivers or software installed that may have been wiped when you formatted the drive?

Try the iMaxpower support site to see if anyone else has had a similar problem, or if its listed on an FAQ or something.

If its not too much of a hassle to do, remove the card and see if the iMac runs at its original speed without the upgrade card.

Someone else will be along in a minute, and they might know what they're talking about, until then, I hope this helps.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

I found the original manual that came with the cpu. It didn't require any software to work, and of course, techno warehouse is no longer. I believe they were swallowed up by Newer Tech which I think is part of OWC now, and they no longer have support for that stuff, I think.

Thanks.

Does it feel like a 66MHz processor, or does it feel like 500MHz? If it feels like it's running at 500MHz, then it is, and the speed is just being displayed wrong, which is my hunch. System Profiler is known to occasionally display wrong data even with Apple hardware, and with upgrades, it's even more common.

This happened once on my powerbook G3, but all it was was that the energy saver settings were all off.

There's a checkbox in energy saver (on powerbooks at least) that says "reduce processor speed." That brings the speed down to 33-66 mhz. Uncheck the box for full performance.

It's an idea.
