I just got off the phone with a friend who bought herself an eMac. She put a cd with pictures on it in the drive, it didn't mount and won't eject. I mean, it really REALLY won't eject. We tried the keyboard, the mouse button during boot, the open firmware "eject cd" command, the paperclip and nothing...the drive refuses to open.

What she wouldn't do for a PC with an eject button! Anyway, she'll call Apple and probably have to ship it off.

I've never seen this happen on a Mac before. Zero CD opening problems here in my 5 years of use of Apple comps.

Since the eMac uses a standard CD-ROM drive, can you flip down the bezel by hand an get at the "hole" to jam a paperclip in? (You mention paperclip, but that is a mechanical thing, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.)

Did the disc get placed properly or was it not in the tray right, causing a jam?

Not sure. I was trying to be helpful over the phone. I can only guess she got the paperclip in the right hole.

Restarting while holding the mouse button down is another way to force eject.
