well not being able to event install OS X anymore on my Beige G3 (use my MDD to install), running it as a dedicated web server, it isn't stable anymore (revenge for getting a new Mac(?)). I just thought, why not use the RCA out and put my 120GB in their, and use it as a iTunes Music Server to play music on my stereo. That's all it would be used for (moving to Mimi for Apache/MySQL/PHP late year). I would RIP CD's on my MDD, them move them to the G3.
  • SPECS:
  • Beige G3 MiniTower Rev A (No slave support (tried with OS X hack Apple had didn't work)
  • AV Personality card (NONE DVD)
  • Radeon Mac:Edition
  • OrangeMicro USB/Firewire
  • Asante 10/100 Ethernet PCI
  • 768MB RAM
  • 24x CD-ROM
  • 120GB
I would use gold plated RCA cable to my AIWIA junk stereo until I can get a receiver. Apple's site says min System Requirements are 400mhz G3. I haven't run iTunes on it since Sept 26, 2003 (when I got my MDD).

What do you mean not stable anymore?

Judging from the specs, it would be a formidable file server, web server and iTunes Music server.

Note that you can install Linux on it and there is a project which allows you to share your music via iTunes Music sharing.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Already tried debian. OldWorld is tuff as hell to install on. I don't want to do iTunes Music Sharing.

It crashes after a few days for some reason, so I have given up on it being a Dev server. If I don't install BSD Sub-system, will SSH still be installed (I assume not)?

If the system is so much trouble, get a cheap PC to do the trick. I'll spend some cash for a media pc, it'll probably be in the 250 € ballpark.

Don't have any cash for a PC, and won't use one (yet), My Beige G3 is what I have, and has RCA out (a key feature for better sound). I think putting in a shorter Master only IDE cable will solve the problems. And I am saving my money for a Mac Mini to be my new Dev Web server.

Today I spent 270 € on a new system (I already had a hd). Silent components, slow CPU, it'll be a great multi-media system

Yeah, I thought about the Mac mini, too, too pricey for what I want to do with it (it would by twice as fast as my iBook, hmmm).
