Hi,

I lent my brother my iMac DV SE 500mhz, because I've gotten new macs since then. However, I want to lend it to a friend now, because my brother just got an iMac G5. I tested out the iMac DV SE's DVD-ROM drive, and the playback of movies is choppy when I make the window large.....it is fine only at the smallest size using Apple's DVD player...

Does anyone know what the problem might be? It has 768MB RAM....and it came with the DVD-ROM drive so shouldn't it be able to play movies? Could it be a firmware issue? I think there were some firmware updates that I never installed before upgrading it to OS X from OS9......

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Playback is fine on my old iMac (g3/450/384). Have you looked at Activity Monitor for CPU and RAM usage ??

Hi,

I looked at the Activity Monitor.....and nothing seemed to be strange or anything.....However, I am going to wipe the hard drive of it just to be safe.....My question though, is this as well: Do you think there are firmware issues? Because there are a couple of firmware updates that can only be installed from OS 9, and I'm not sure if I ever did that.....

If you didn't install the fireware update there can be problems. I have heard of many people installing OSX without the updates and the system refuses to boot. There is a fix but it isn't something I would want to have to do. If the system doesn't have the updates you should consider yourself lucky that the system works. I don't know of exactly what kind of other problems can occur. Good luck with everything and let us know how it goes.

Real simple to find out. Go into System Profiler, under the main heading (Hardware Overview) there will be an entry labelled "Boot ROM version". If it says 4.1.9f1 then you are updated. If its lower, then you are not.
